HUNTER CLASSICS AMATEUR WOMEN'S TOUR
Hunter
Classics Goes to Legend's Billiards!
42 women came to play pool
at Legend's Billiards in League City on the hot August weekend of 10-11,
2002. This 5th Hunter Classics stop saw many women from different
ages and different countries. From age 13 to 61, from Canada to Texas,
the ladies came to play for the Qualifiers and the first place prize of
$750! In the end, it would be Lisa Marr winning the tournament (and
the WPBA Qualifier) with Sherri Hudson placing second.
Wes Hunter, our title sponsor
and continued strong supporter, donated another beautiful cue valued
at $1,900. Shazy Sarwar, a local and very supportive spectator, won
the cue. Our media sponsor, "Cuetimes," raffled off a subscription
and Marie Moffett from Fort Worth won the subscription.
Shazy Sarwar
Mindy Cohen, owner and manager
of Legend's Billiards, hosted another wonderful stop for the ladies with
20 newly re-felted tables, a wonderful wait staff and a great atmosphere.
Mindy was our tournament director and the tournament ran smoothly with
only 8 players left on Sunday in the main event.
On the one-loss side, Leslie
Anne Rogers and Orietta Strickland once again met each other on Sunday
with Leslie winning 7-4. Lisa Marr defeated newcomer Sheila Huynh
7-3, while on the winner's side Sherri Hudson defeated Audra Carter 7-5
with Susan Bishop defeating Mindy Williams 7-4. Lisa then defeated
Mindy 7-4 and because they were the last two left in the tournament who
were eligible for the Qualifier, Lisa won the WPBA Qualifier. Mindy
Williams placed 5th/6th and is keeping her Most Improved Player Award in
the light while Audra Carter placed 5th/6th again this month and has been
having a great year. They both won $150. Sheila and Orietta
won $100 for placing 7th/8th.
Audra Carter and Mindy Williams, 5th/6th place
Sherri, from Houston, went
on to defeat Susan Bishop, from Irving, 7-5 for the winner's bracket.
Lisa Marr was on the other side defeating Leslie Rogers 7-6. Although
this was only Susan's second Hunter tournament, she placed an impressive
3rd place, won $400 and the Texas State Open Qualifier. Leslie Anne
Rogers placed 4th and won $250.
An interesting note is Lisa
Marr and Sherri met once before in this tournament - their very first match.
While both had a bye the first round, Sherri defeated Lisa 7-5 and sent
her to the one loss side until she came back and met Sherri in the finals!
Sherri's road to the finals
were with wins over Lisa, Kim Pierce (7-1), Sheila Huynh (7-5), Audra Carter
(7-5) and Susan Bishop (7-5) before meeting up with Lisa again.
After losing to Sherri her
first match, Lisa began her streak with wins over Suzanne Walkuski (7-3),
Tina Lehrmann (7-2), Helen Hayes (7-5), Ladonna Ulrich (7-), Lucille Donahue
(7-2), Sheila Huynh (7-3), Mindy Williams (7-4), Leslie Anne Rogers (7-6),
Susan Bishop (7-3) and then defeated Sherri Hudson two sets in this double
elimination tournament 7-5 and 7-4. Lisa won $750 for first place
and the WPBA Qualifier, Sherri won $550 for her second place finish.
Congratulations to all the women!
Sherri Hudson, Mindy Cohen and Lisa Marr
On the Sunday the Second
Chance Tournament was going on with 27 women playing! In the end,
Melinda Bailey, Hunter Classics Board Member, defeated Houston's Ladonna
Ulrich in the finals. Melinda won $120, Ladonna won $90, with Shayla
Neris (from Austin) winning $70 for 3rd place and Jo Losoya (from Houston)
having a great weekend and placing 4th and winning $40. Kim Pierce
won the Texas State Open Qualifier in this tournament.
First time in the money, Legend's very own Tasha Salandana
Thanks again to Wes Hunter,
