HUNTER CLASSICS AMATEUR WOMEN'S TOUR
Feb. 21-22, 1998 Rio Rancho, NM Slate Street
Billiards
On this beautiful weekend
in Albuquerque, NM, 51 women from New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona,
Kansas and even Nevada, showed up for the event! Many prizes were
given this weekend, which included towels and gloves for making the 9-ball
on the break. Not only was a Hunter cue raffled off as usual which
was won by Nikki Farrell, but some lucky winners also got a beer chest,
certificates for cue repairs, another cue (besides Wes'), cue case,
etc. Slate Street Billiards was kind enough to let us play
on 16 of their beautiful 9’ tables. The food was good, tables were excellent,
music selection was great, the Albuquerque women treated the out of towners
with respect and niceness. We all enjoyed
ourselves and had a great time, thanks to the much appreciated help from
Mona Biddle.
The weather was cool, the
sky partly loudy and 51 women were ready to play nine ball! The races
to 7 started promptly at 10 am Saturday morning with only a few of us getting
byes. By 11:30 am...everyone had played at least one match and the
race was on! Melissa Little ran through the top winners bracket to
meet number 12 ranked Laura Smith and was knocked into the losers bracket.
Melanie Koger then met Laura for the fight for the winners bracket, and
Laura won that match as well. Laura then had to wait for Melissa
and Melanie to meet to see who would win the privilege of playing her.
The match between Melissa and Melanie was very important to these two girls!
They each had a chance to win the qualifier to play at the Valley Forge
WBPA event! Melissa played very well against Melanie, running several
racks in the race to 9. Melanie held her own and put up a good fight,
but Melissa won that match and also the qualifier! Then, with only
a few minutes to rest, she was to face Laura again. The match started
off slow, each player taking their time, playing safes, even laughing at
times (letting their guard down was unusual, but nice to see). Melissa
finally pulled ahead in the race to eleven and won the tournament!
The final was a joy to watch and these two women put up a good fight, and
were very courteous! The crowd loved them! Congratulations
Melissa!
Our special thanks to Wes
Hunter who donated another one of his beautiful custom made cue.
A HUGE thanks goes out to Barry Bookman and Slate Street Billiards for
hosting our tournament. Jim and Evelyn helped run it with Sunny Hegarty's
help. Mona Biddle, who is also the House Pro at Slate Street Billiards
went through a great deal of work to help make sure this stop was a great
success! Slate Street Billiards is a beatiful place to play at, and
their staff is excellent, and so is their cook! Yum!

The second chance tournament
was a huge success. There was an added $200 to the pot. First
place received $200, second place received $100, and third place received
$75! Thanks to Slate Street Billiards for the added money.
Everyone had alot of fun, and we all made new friends. Albuquerque
is a beautiful place to visit.
Judy Byam stole the show
by not only going undefeated, but also going home $200 richer! Susan
Dasher once again took second place and Barbara Riojas also took third
place for the second time in a row! Way to go ladies! Maybe
next time ya’ll could let someone else win for a change?! Just kidding!
